Olivia and I spent the rest of the day just moving from classroom to classroom waiting for the day to be over. Mondays are no fun.

“I heard rumors that Noah made the football team” Olivia tried to say it nonchalantly but I could see right through her, she was more interested than she pretended to be.

“I think that’s why he transferred. It’s not like our school is better than any other, except for our football team of course” I said and picked my math textbook from my locker before closing it to look at Olivia.

“Well, he doesn’t look like a football kind-of-guy” she said. “But I saw him walking with Gabe and Cole” she continued and we began walking towards our last lesson for today.

“Just because he walked with them doesn’t mean he’s on the team. But I get your point” I added the last part to make sure she understood what I meant.

“Did you see the way all the girls just threw themselves over him? I have a feeling he will break a lot of hearts during the year” Olivia said and sighed. “I just have to make sure he doesn’t break mine. You know how easily I fall for guys” she continued and made it sound like an excuse for thinking he was hot.

“Soph!” I turned around at the sound of Cole’s voice. “I need to talk to you” he dragged me with him a bit away from Olivia and I could see his friends, standing a bit further away, over his shoulder.

“What’s up? Did something happen?” I asked with concern.

“Nothing happened, or, sort of. Gabe’s older brother is having a party this weekend and Gabe wants Olivia to come. He doesn’t want it to be too obvious though so could you maybe ask her? I’m coming as well, and you can too if you want” he looked back at Gabe who, for the first time, looked nervous. Cole’s gaze then went to Olivia who was standing alone in the hallway in confusion.

“Does he like her? Well obviously he does since he wants her to come” I rolled my eyes at my own stupidity. “We’ll be there” I smiled and turned to go back to Olivia, but stopped myself after two steps and went back to Cole.

“Uhm, did Noah make the football team?” I regretted asking as soon as I’d spoken the words out loud.

“No” his face expressed confusion. “He didn’t do a try out, he doesn’t play football” he added the last with suspicion.

“Thanks, Olivia wondered so I thought I’d ask you since you walked with him earlier” it sounded more stalkish than I intended it to. I quickly turned and walked towards Olivia.

While walking I turned to Gabe and blinked with my right eye as to tell him I was in on the plan, and he responded with a wide smile.

“What was that about?” Olivia asked when I reached her.

“You’re up for a party?”

It was Saturday evening and the week had passed by surprisingly quick. Olivia had agreed on going to the party, although she had made sure she wasn’t going for Gabe’s sake. Apparently he’s not good looking enough.

Cole was already at Gabe’s, with some other guys and girls from our school. He had asked if Olivia and I wanted to come earlier as well, but I’d told him it was better if we came later. When there were more people. Mainly because I didn’t want Gabe to be disappointed when Olivia would reject him, but also because I felt more secure coming to a party when people weren’t totally sober.

Someone, probably Olivia, knocked on the front door and I went to open for her.

“Did you know Noah is going to be there?” her heels echoed when she walked into my house dressed in a tiny black dress.

“No I didn’t”.

“Well he is. And I am very exited about that” she finished talking and sat down on a chair at our dinner table with a smile on her face.

“Gabe is going to be there” I smiled and tried to make her exited about seeing the one guy who actually was descent for her. Olivia had a habit of going after twenty-five year-old smokers with tattoos and six-packs.

“I know. The party is at his house. It would be strange if he wasn’t there” she didn’t seem to care much about him, so I decided to drop it.

“So, Noah then. Have you talked to him during the week? Or is it just his looks attracting you?” I picked two glasses from the kitchen and a soda from the fridge.

“I talked to him in math” she grabbed her bag and took out a bottle filled with something strong and gross, I could tell by the smell.

“What did you talk about then?” I asked as she poured up some of the liquid from the bottle into our glasses, followed by some sprite to mix it with.

“Math, mostly. I asked him if he could explain an exercise I had problems with” I watched her carefully while tasting my drink. It was disgusting.

“God! What is this?!” I stood up to get some water to get rid of the awful smell.

“My sister gave it to me” she answered.

“Well it’s gross. How was he? Noah I mean” I continued and for once I didn’t have to pretend to sound interested. For some reason I was actually wondering how he was.

“He didn’t help me. Instead he just shook his head and told me to ask the teacher” she said and sighed. “but I am not giving up! I think there is a nice boy somewhere within him, I’ll just have to dig a little deeper. Tonight” she continued and smiled.

“It sounds like you have a plan”

“Let’s go, we don’t want to be late!” I dragged her with me to the hall and put on a pair of black, high boots. Heels would be more appropriate, but I want to be able to walk home as well.

“Sophie!” Gabe hugged me tightly and almost spilled his drink on me. “I’m so happy you could make it! Here’s my brother, James. James, this is Sophie. Cole’s sister” I shook James’ hand and smiled widely.

“You do not look like twins. You and Cole, I mean” James said and tilted his head trying to figure out the equation.

“We have different mom’s, we’re not twins,” I said and he slowly nodded his head.

“Well I’m happy to have you either way” he said and made a gesture for me to come in.

“Thank you” I said and looked over my shoulder at Olivia who were close behind, and Gabe who was standing further back with an expression of disappointment.

“Give him a chance” I whispered in Olivia’s ear and gave her a serious look.

“Maybe. But right now I need a drink” she said and totally ignored my attempt to give her a bad conscious.

I followed Olivia into the house, which was big and airy. A very modern furnishing with black furniture that looked very expensive.

Someone put a cap on my head and an arm around my shoulders.

“Hey!” I shouted when I saw that it was Cole.

“Gabe doesn’t look very happy,” he told me as we started walking towards the kitchen where the booze was.

“I can’t force her to do anything she doesn’t want to do” I shook off his arm but kept the cap.

“But you can talk her into giving him a chance at least. You and I are the wingmen for tonight” he smiled proudly and poured up a glass of wine for me.

“Thanks” I accepted the glass and tasted the white wine.
